Insecure Writer’s Support Group

Time for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) post for August. The awesome co-hosts for the August 6th posting of the IWSG are Ronel Janse van VuurenNatalie AguirreSarah – The Faux Fountain Pen, and Olga Godim!

The optional question this month is – What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

I’m not sure this is the most unethical, but it is a current issue I abhor—AI theft of creative works. I think it is beyond reprehensible that AI companies have been allowed to train AI models on creator work and then use that to “create” their own work to replace creators. It is theft.

On a lighter note, a close encounter of the grizzly kind.

I leave you with a song. See you next month.

  1. I completely agree that it should never be used to pass for original work. It can make a good tool for assisting in different aspects of writing, but the writing should be your own work. I use art AI to do concept art for my world and characters, which my kid can then use to do original artwork for me. It’s easier than trying to describe what I’m looking for because they can sometimes find it hard to visualize what I’m saying. But like I said, works great as a tool, not to do the work for you.

    Thanks for hosting!

I agree that AI stealing creative works is morally wrong.

Sorry, forgot to log in before posting this.

I agree with you about AI–and I’m even more disgusted by people selling AI-generated books and other art and not labeling them as such. As if creative types didn’t already struggle to support themselves with their work.

Yes, AL theft of authors’ work is terrible.

I know the Author’s Guild is trying to fight that, but I really haven’t heard of any progress. That theft needs to stop.

  8. AI is a popular choice today.

Wow, that was really close with the bear! Although what the heck was the mascot doing wearing his gear while fishing? I guess a photo shoot? Odd.
