Insecure Writer’s Support Group

It is time once again for a post of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG). We are a far-flung group of keyboard monkeys who share our thoughts on the first Wednesday of each month. If you haven’t yet checked out some of the participants, here’s your chance.

Today’s co-hosts are Natalie Aguirre, Nancy Gideon, Diedre Knight and me!

The optional September 3 question is what are your thoughts on using AI, such as GPChat, Raptor, and others with your writing? Would you use it for research, storybible, or creating outlines\beats?

I don’t use AI for any part of my writing process. I don’t want to donate my creative ideas to the millions of scraped ideas those products compile and then regurgitate. Creation is too valuable in human life to donate to a computerized filing cabinet.

Now that I’ve told Ai to get off my lawn, I’ll share an adorable news piece.

I leave you with a musical nugget. Enjoy it, and I’ll see you next month.

I’ve been finding it hard to consider AI as a potentially useful tool because of the moral lines it crosses with, for example, “sampling” the work or authors without permission. Maybe one day, the inappropriate aspects will be de-regulated out and there need not be any moral challenges to its use in the future. Sadly, I’m not confident in that being the likely outcome.

Thanks for co-hosting this month 🙂

I like the picture in my head of AI being a digitalized filing cabinet. Thanks for co-hosting!

I agree. Writing is too valuable of a human activity to waste on handing over to AI. My only exception is assistance with grammar-checking and research, and I even have my limits on AI for those.

Thanks to you and the others for co-hosting!

I kind of follow the Swift/Kelce romance but this is the first time I’ve actually listened to one of her videos, so thank you! That was unexpected and fun. Also, thank you for hosting . . . and we’re pretty much in the same place with AI! Happy fall.

Also anti-AI here. I’ve never seen this video before. Fun!

I loved your post, Kim! From your thoughts on AI to the racing corgis to the great Taylor Swift song (which I hadn’t heard before). Thanks for co-hosting again! Happy September!

I wouldn’t use Al for creative writing either. But it can be a helpful tool for other tasks. Thanks for co-hosting with me.

Why are corgi dogs so cute? It’s probably their short legs. Thanks for sharing that.

    Have a lovely day.

    Hi,

I hear what you’re saying, but I want to know more about it before I block it completely from my list.

    Thanks for co-hosting.

Get off your lawn indeed, and out of our lives, except its already there to such a degree I think we’d be shocked when it disappeared. Writing-wise though, it is an absolute no go! Thank you for co-hosting this month!

  19. Hi,

    Thanks for hosting.

Skies mysteriously silent today, no sign of any helicopters, even the little ones ,used for rescuing lost hikers. No military, trying to scalp us – low flying zone.

Total bathroom replacement and IWSG first Wednesday isn’t great timing, but tday, I’ve learned so much about being a plumber, especially that I should have been one, and failing that , married one, Very soon, and wearing goggles, will take a claw hammer to the ancient and non-functioning WC, extracted, at last, from the slate and rock floor of our downstairs bathroom, used to be a shed for the house cow. House cow ? Beef cattle farming, not keen on being milked, especially the bull

People have turned this job down for so long. WC not Excalibur, or anything else encased in stone, According to today’s hero, not even difficult., Apparentjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjy

No AI? Really? Here’s where I admit that I’m a little plugged into the community than most with a hubby and 4 brothers who are all in the tech industry. (Programming specifically.) It hit their world sooner than most and has become a boon to them. Everyone was worried at first, but there will always need to be human guidance and regulation, no matter what AI produces. And it ALWAYS produces glitches or messes things up, so again, the human element to correct… I’ve been able to toy with various forms of AI (images, video, audio, writing) and have found tools that help and tools that are…well, a time suck. But I appreciate what the new technology can add to our efforts. =)

I’m not opposed to it per se, but I think we rob from ourselves if we turn over our very human forms of expression. We need tech to give us more time to create not to do our creation for us.

  21. Get off your lawn – funny!

I bet it’s also funny to watch Corgis run.

    Thanks for co-hosting today!
