It is time for yet another first Wednesday posting of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG). The optional question this month is: How do you define success as a writer? Is it holding your book in your hand? Having a short story published? Making a certain amount of income from your writing?

I do define success as holding a physical book in my hand. A physical book has always been part of the reading experience for me, so it is an important aspect of feeling like I achieved my writing goal. Enough money to write full time is part of the long-term goal, but the physical book piece comes first.

Happy Wednesday, folks! I’m a happy camper today because I had a good editing day this morning. The words flowed beautifully. There’s almost nothing better. Optional monthly question – What is your favorite writing craft book? Think of a book that every time you read it you learn something or you are inspired to write or try the new technique. And why?

Good question! My new favorite is Story Genius by Lisa Kron. It is an amazing how-to on using your MC’s internal struggle as a third rail to build a story which invests readers and makes every page worth turning. It has been a game-changer in the drafting of my third book, increasing both character and story depth as well as the speed with which I write. I recommend it to anyone who wants to level up.
