Weekly News (Whoops)

Welcome back to another Wednesday edition of the weekly news. Ignore the date on your computer–it is Wednesday. I promise. Um … all right, all right. It’s Thursday. I, um, forgot that yesterday was Wednesday. You can’t see it, but a blush has stretched from neck to forehead. 😉

I really don’t know what happened, but I’ll make it up to you with some great Thanksgiving-inspired news pieces. Sound good?

Fast, but gross. Who wants turkey that’s drenched with water? Yuck.

The finished meal looks absolutely appetizing, doesn’t it? Not.

Last, but most assuredly not least, we should be thankful for science. Understanding our world is at the heart of improving it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you here in the U.S. and abroad. I will definitely see you in six, instead of seven. Doh!

Weekly News

Welcome back for some actual news. I’m still pouting about the election, but I pulled it together for all of you. Did you hear that collective cheer from across the globe?

Hmm…me either. 😉

I had my Halloween candy taken when I was eleven. I know there were some Kit Kats. I’ve waited so long, perhaps a lifetime supply?

http://m.sfgate.com/news/education/article/College-student-has-Kit-Kat-stolen-company-sends-10601139.php

This is so cool. I’m picturing those enormous Harry Potter spiders with guitars and ukuleles. 🙂

Finally, some science news. Helpful poop. The middle school teacher in me just could not resist.

That’ll do it for me tonight, my friends. See you in seven.

Weekly News

Wow! The United States just experienced an unbelievable presidential election result. For those of you outside the U.S. I cannot begin to describe the impact of this event on every aspect of life today. Everyone has their opinions and feelings regarding this election, but I must admit to an overwhelming sense of malaise today. To combat it, and lift the mood of anyone who feels similarly: music.

Feel free to partake, even if you are pleased by the results or are completely ambivalent.

This first one feels good. Fighting doesn’t mean staying divided. We can fight by refusing to BE divided.

“Once I rose above the noise and confusion…” Can’t beat this Kansas doozy. Bonus feature: Supernatural footage. 😉

Last up tonight is my current way to lift my spirits. Andra Day is awesome! You’re welcome!

Sleep well, my friends. I’ll see you in seven.

IWSG and Weekly News

InsecureWritersSupportGroup2

Welcome to the November round of nervousness and insecurity. Adding in a fall month, especially the month with Thanksgiving, makes the twittering and hand wringing more special. Click the image above and take a peek. It will be quite an enjoyable peek–I promise. 🙂

A ton of thanks for our November co-hosts: Joylene Nowell Butler, Jen Chandler, Mary Aalgaard, Lisa Buie Collard, Tamara Narayan, Tyrean Martinson, and Christine Rains!

The question this month: What is your favorite aspect of being a writer?

So many sarcastic comments and internet memes of a writer sitting before an over-loaded desk spring to mind. I do have quite a wicked sarcastic streak. But as this can also be a REAL question–that’s right I capitalized the entire word to give it extra meaning, and realness–I suppose I’ll be good and simply answer the question directly.

The naked truth is: seeing my thoughts come alive. Although it is eminently challenging to get the words to truly capture the entirety of what I’ve built inside my head–dang, that place is confusing–I truly love watching how a single plot idea, character, or situation can grow and evolve into something that feels real. Alive. It is in those moments, in those scenes, where I suddenly also feel at my most alive. And that, my friends, is my favorite aspect of being a writer.

Time for the news.

First up is the most messed up Wi-Fi password situation I’ve seen. That is just all kinds of wrong for those of us permanently connected to our devices.

Um … did the president of the Philippines just say he hears voices?

This week’s science news could be huge for kids and parents dealing with the devastating effects of autism. Imagine holding the key to unlocking your child’s communication abilities.

That’s it for me, folks. See you in seven.

Weekly News

Welcome back, folks. Wednesday stole in with the stealth of a ninja over here, shocking me as I turned from Tuesday and found it staring directly at me. It’s a sneaky day of the week I tell you. Sneaky. Since it’s here, I guess I’ll get it together and share some news.

First up, a badass spider that rivals the cow I posted about several weeks ago. WTF? I would not stay and film this let alone adopt the behemoth. Cue high-pitched scream and a jump onto a chair.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/spider-eats-mouse_us_580e8b49e4b0a03911ee6de7?ncid=engmodushpmg00000006

I get you. I’ll take a Caramel Latte. Please and thank you.

This is a fascinating study to factor into my world building for my fantasy novel. Science adds to every aspect of our lives.Boom!

Thanks for spending another chunk of your Wednesday (or whatever day you check this) with me. Same time, same place in seven.

Weekly News

I am trying to multi-task while writing this. Sorry, but the last presidential debate is on, and I am currently obsessed with this election. CRAZY! This means that tonight’s news post will be short. Don’t fret, though, I have managed to make it funny as well.

Brilliant criminals are never in short supply. *Facepalm*

An interesting morsel for you during this election cycle. Science and politics together.

http://www.livescience.com/56508-why-political-parties-view-science-issues-differently.html

That’s it for me. I’m going to focus on the last few minutes of the debates and the follow-up discussion. Have a good night all! And please, please, please remember to vote.

Weekly News

Welcome back to another edition of Kim Lajevardi’s Weekly News. *Cue music and a great graphic sequence*

I’m waiting.

Oh, you mean I’d have to actually have those things? Um … shut up. That’s funny. I’m over here with a serious smirk on my face. Really. All right. I give up on you serious news folks. You’re waiting for my hard-hitting journalism links, huh? Okay.

This first one shows that a flip-flop armed woman is scary, or maybe she’s just stupid. You decide.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/crocodile-vs-flip-flop-australia_us_57f46df6e4b03254526255b9?section=us_weird-news

Next up is the funniest example I’ve seen of the Pokemon Go craze. Makes me kind of like her.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/erna-solberg-pokemon-go_us_57f554dee4b05f39c51ddd22?section=us_weird-news

Instead of science news today, a song. This is one of my new favorite songs, and it helped me get through a bad day at the beginning of the week. Gotta share.

That’s it for me this week. Enjoy your week and I’ll see you in seven.

IWSG and Weekly News

InsecureWritersSupportGroup

It’s time once again for The Insecure Support Group (IWSG). Every month a motley crew of twittering writers shares either the answers to a monthly writing-related question or their own bubbling insecurities, whichever trips forward first. The co-hosts for the October 5 posting of the IWSG are Beverly Stowe McClure, Megan Morgan, Viola Fury, Madeline Mora-Summonte, Angela Wooldridge, and Susan Gourley!

October 5 Question: When do you know your story is ready?

I don’t. Pretty short answer, huh? Okay, okay … I’ll elaborate. The truth is when I just can’t look at it anymore.

Sounds bad, huh? Let me explain. I’m a constant fiddler, and at some point–some very long point, I will tire of the constant nature of rewrites. When that happens, I move it to the next step. But I always reserve the right to go back to it when I tire of whatever I’m currently working on. See why I said that I don’t know when my story is ready? 😉

Next up is a departure from my normal weekly news feature. One of my amazing critique partners just released her book, and I am ecstatic to be able to share it with you today. Lexa Cain is not only an amazing writer, but the characters and plot she created in Bloodwalker expose us to a world we haven’t seen before. Please check it out!

bl-cover-400x270

Lightning flashes. Another child disappears…

When Zorka Circus performs, its big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, there are fewer children in the European towns it leaves behind.

Circus Security Chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the international performers, but they close ranks—they’ve always viewed lightning-scarred Rurik as the monster. Nevertheless, he’s determined to find the culprit and stop them before anyone else dies and the only place he can call home is ripped apart by the murders.

Into Zorka Circus comes the Skomori clan, despised as gravediggers and ghoulish bloodwalkers. A one-day truce allows bloodwalker Sylvie to marry. Instead, she finds a body. Alerting others will defy her clan’s strict rules, break the truce, and leave her an outcast.

When more bodies turn up, the killer’s trail becomes impossible to ignore. Rurik and Sylvie must follow the clues—even if they lead to something unimaginable…

Weekly News

Welcome back one and all. I imagined a big sweeping arm movement as I typed that last sentence. It was imagery that brought a smile to my face. Can you tell that this week has definitely been an improvement over last week?

The first news story up this week is so cool. Birds sleeping in flight. I’m jealous of the flight and of the naps.

http://news.sky.com/story/brain-tracker-finds-birds-sleep-during-flight-10521380

That little guy really looks like a toy. I’d think it was staged if it were any other source.

That’s for me tonight. See you back here in seven.

Weekly News

Welcome back to the longest hump day so far this school year. All day it felt like it should be Friday, and no matter how much I wished it to be, it remained Wednesday. It wasn’t even a challenging day. Argh … fall is going to take forever.

I need a distraction.

This first diversion didn’t just take my mind off of my weird Wednesday, it made me contemplate the badassery of cows. Holy cow! 😉

And finally in science news, the earth weebles and it wobbles. The wobbles changing the migratory patterns of humankind. Where’d you think I was going with that?

http://www.livescience.com/56188-humans-left-africa-due-to-earth-wobbles.html

That’s all for me folks. I’m off to try and genie-blink Thursday into Friday. If Barbara Eden can do it … ah, hush.
